Mailing List

Chances are you pay money for a business mailing list, which means you want to get the most out of it. Just having names and addresses on hand won't mean that you know how to take advantage of that information, and just sending out advertising won't mean that you'll get results from that advertising.

Getting the most from your mailing list means understanding how to sort and filter the information in that list and also means knowing what to send to those on the list itself. This starts with your advertising materials and ensuring that they're the best they can be, and it means knowing how to work with a mailing list effectively.

Advertising materials.

What are you sending to those on your mailing list? How effective and eye-catching is that material? Has it been prepared by a professional or did you make it up yourself? When someone is a professional graphic artist, they go to school for years to learn how to create materials that are appropriate for different industries and different purposes. It doesn't matter the names on your mailing list if your materials are not appropriate and don't get your point across!

One thing to remember about the names on your mailing list is that you don't want to try to give them all the information about your company possible with a postcard or mailer. Typically what you send out through the mail is just a teaser or something that encourages them to find out more at your website or elsewhere. Trying to send out too much information in one mailer is a good way to actually turn off those on your mailing list, so be careful with your materials.

Filtering and sorting.

It's good to filter and sort the names and information you have on your mailing list before you send out anything. Usually you want to send your first group some information and then expand from there. This means choosing the best selection of names that are on that mailing list and starting with them. For example, you may want to send information to those in the banking industry but may want to start with ones in the mortgage department first.

When you do some filtering and sorting of your mailing list, you can then gage the responses you get and the quality of those responses. If you're not getting enough responses then expand your next group of those on your mailing list and again, keep track of those responses as well.

Multiple uses.

A mailing list will eventually age out and the information become outdated, but it usually takes some time for this to happen. Be sure to use your information more than once for more than one promotional campaign. You need to wait some time between campaigns so you're not bombarding clients and customers, but you can use the information on your mailing list more than once to get the most out of it.
